Privacy policy sounds dull but is actually quite important, and what website is complete without one? So here is the Decipher My Data privacy policy that tells you what information we collect about you and what we do with it.
What information do we collect about you and why?
Upon registration we ask teachers for their real name, school and email address. When students register we ask for their real name and email address. We need email addresses to notify you when the scientists have replied to comments, and to contact you about this event and other events we think you might be interested in. You will be able to unsubscribe from any news update emails.
When you’re logged in to the site you can see your own data and username, but you won’t be able to see anyone else’s outside of your school. And no one outside your school will be able to see yours. Your real name never gets used without your permission, unless we have reason to contact the teacher.
How does the site work?
During the project our computers put a session cookie on your computer. If you block this cookie the site can’t work, so please don’t do that. A session cookie is a small file that identifies who you are and uses your username (we will never put your real name on the site). When you log off the cookie is removed from your computer.
As you use the site we do record some information that could be traced to you. We record if you’ve updated your profile, if you’ve contributed to the LabLog or sent a comment to the scientists, for example. This information NEVER gets released though.
We also record when you log-in and where you log-in from (your IP address). We log the IP address so that if someone registers on the site claiming to be someone else then we can see where they log-in from. It also helps us track any technical issues.
That sounds like a lot, but personal information doesn’t get given away and nobody will be able to trace it to you.
We certainly do NOT share your personal information, nor any means of identifying you, with anyone else. No companies, no sponsors.
